New Products!

We have lots of new books and other items in this week, just arrived in the mail! New Bibles, journals, some books by A.W. Tozer and Spurgeon… And we have some neat new things, like note pads, garden flags, and “soul mates” — little ceramic shoes with matching a note pad and pen! Very cute!

Still Looking for Volunteers

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are still looking for volunteers so we can be open more. At the moment, we are open 2 days a week, but we’d sure like to be open more!  Please call the Women Support Centre at 926-4475 or the bookstore at 926-2003 and speak to us (or leave a message) if you are interested. If you could give a half a day each week, that would be great!

Come For the Sales!

Well, the blog for the bookstore has been on hiatus, but the store certainly hasn’t! We are open 5 days a week (Tuesday – Saturday), and right now we have a HUGE sale on! We’re informally calling it “the Mary’s Gone Crazy Sale.” One of our volunteers, Mary, seriously marked down lots of books — down to $2 even! We’ve already sold quite a few, so make sure you come down and see what’s here!

Although we’ve been open a lot, we are currently looking for volunteers, so if you’re interested, read this page first, and then contact us at 780-926-2003 (leave a message if we aren’t able to get the phone) and leave your name and number.

The Story Behind the Store

The Lighthouse Bookstore is a small building located right beside the High Level Women Support Centre in High Level, Alberta.

The building was built by Dirk and Antje Breugem in 2006 with the hopes that it would be a peaceful, welcoming place filled with resources and fellowship!  In the spring of 2007, a group of volunteers started working on the inside of the store and planning the layout.  People starting bringing in donations of used books, shelves and furniture.  We bought bookshelves and a huge pile of books and CDs from a nearby bookstore that was going out of business, and more shelves from a video store.  The shelves were an array of mismatched colours, but people stepped up and donated a paint sprayer and shop space so that all the shelves could be painted the same colour!  A flurry of activity took place in June – more painting, organizing, cleaning, unpacking books, DVDs, CDs and greeting cards and putting them on shelves and racks.
Putting shelf brackets on Going through the used books Touch up painting on the main counter The shelves are finally full!

After a lot of work, the bookstore opened on Saturday, July 14, 2007!  Since then, we’ve already ordered more stock once, as well as several custom orders for people who are looking for certain books.  All proceeds from the Lighthouse support the work at the Women Support Centre.
